Transitions

Sometimes referred to as the fourth discipline within triathlon. Transitions can make or break a race. They can help maintain your positive momentum. Or they can provide an opportunity to regroup.

The objective is to keep whatever you do while moving from swim to bike or bike to run to a minimum. Your mind is already in overdrive. Don't task it anymore than necessary.

In transitioning from the swim to the bike, what do you really need to do? Remove your wetsuit. Put on your helmet, sunglasses and shoes (if not yet clipped on your pedals). Nutrition should be on your bike. Wear tri clothes, including calf compression gear, beneath your wetsuit. Socks, learn to ride without them.  And go. *Weather conditions might dictate a few additional pieces of clothing.

From bike to run? Rack bike first. Socks for anything greater than 10k. Shoes with elastic laces. Remove helmet last. Hat, sunnies and gel flask or belt. And go, making final adjustments as you dash out of T2.

Simplicity is rule No 1.

Bricks offer a chance to train for transitions. Set up as if you're in T2. Practice, practice and practice. Remember the more automatic a transition is, the less you have to think. Know what you need to do far in advance.
